MLC Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee

The MLC Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee was established in 2005. It provides a forum for Midwestern state legislators to exchange information and ideas on key agricultural and natural resource policies.

The committee is led by its two co-chairs, Minnesota Rep. Al Juhnke and Illinois Rep. Rich Myers.

The Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee represents state government on key regional and national issues, promotes the importance of agriculture to America’s economy and society, and guides MLC projects related to agriculture and other policy issues impacting the rural Midwest. Meetings of the committee facilitate information sharing and discussion among state officials and serve as a forum for public-private dialogue on agricultural and natural resource policy.

One ongoing service of this MLC committee (done in collaboration with agriculture committees from other regional CSG offices) is Ag Clips, a weekly electronic newsletter that provides updates on regional, national and international issues of importance to Midwestern policymakers. To view the current Ag Clips, click here. Subscriptions are free, and members are encouraged to submit articles for inclusion. Please contact Carolyn Orr to receive Ag Clips.

Topics of priority to committee members for 2009-2010 include:

  • Ensuring a future for Midwestern livestock producers by addressing issues related to environmental and animal-welfare concerns;
  • Review of issues affecting international trade, border issues, Country of Origin Labeling and animal traceback programs;
  • Opportunities for Midwestern state leadership and collaboration in biofuels and other bio-based industries;
  • Obstacles related to increased development, production and use of bio-based products and co-products;
  • The impact of water issues on the agriculture industry in the Midwest;
  • Working collaboratively to address regional water issues; and
  • Increasing and prioritizing agriculture research and extension funding.
