MLC Economic Development Committee

The MLC Economic Development Committee has been in existence since 1996. The committee provides a forum for Midwestern legislators to examine issues affecting the economic conditions of the individual states within the Midwest and the economic condition of the region as a whole.

Consisting of legislators from the 11 member states of the MLC and the provinces of Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan, the committee provides a forum for interstate dialogue, allowing policymakers to exchange information and program ideas, to discuss and formulate innovative solutions to common challenges, and to issue position statements on matters of interest to the Midwest.

The committee has examined state approaches to encourage the development of a knowledge-based economy, the role of technology in economic growth and development strategies, and the role of job training and education in creating a 21st Century workforce.

Current Committee Focus

During the 2009-10 biennium, the Economic Development Committee is focusing on three major areas: (1) entrepreneurial growth; (2) education and workforce development; and (3) the "green" economy.

E-Newsletter

The committee produces a regular e-newsletter, Economic Development News, which is available to anyone interested in keeping up on news and highlights on the region's economy and economic development efforts. The electronic publication includes a regular commentary by Dr. Graham Toft, president and CEO of GrowthEconomics. Click here to subscribe.
