Agenda

The North Central Bioeconomy Consortium
At the 2007 MLC Energy Committee meeting in Traverse City, Michigan, a resolution was adopted to collaborate with the NCBC and to invite members of the organization to present this year on Midwestern bioeconomy research and projects. (The North Central Bioeconomy Consortium is a partnership between land grant universities and state departments of agriculture in twelve Midwestern states.)

Presenter:
Brendan Jordan,
Staff, the North Central Bioeconomy Consortium

Nuclear Energy
Increasingly, nuclear energy is being discussed as a means to meet growing energy needs. What are the issues that need to be addressed with nuclear energy? Mr. Murphy will outline the issues: construction costs; financing; fuel supply reliability; and safety and public acceptance. An unresolved issue tied to nuclear power is the disposal of the spent nuclear fuel it produces. Ms. Janairo will provide an overview of the federal government's plans for disposing of this highly radioactive waste, renewed interest in programs to "recycle" the waste, and the potential impacts of waste shipments on the Midwestern region.

Presenters:
John Murphy, Researcher and Instructor, University of Wisconsin
Lisa Janairo,
Senior Policy Analyst, The Council of State Governments

Midwestern Governors Association’s Energy Security and Climate Stewardship Platform
The Energy Security and Climate Stewardship Platform sets out various policy options for reaching goals related to energy efficiency, biobased products and transportation, renewable electricity, and carbon capture and storage. It also calls on participating states to establish regional partnerships and initiatives on energy policy. Mr. Roberts will discuss the platform and the work of the MGA in advancing the established goals.

Presenter:
Hunter Roberts,
Assistant Energy Director, South Dakota

Energy Efficiency & the Smart Grid
Energy efficiency is an important option for states as they consider how to meet growing energy needs. What are the states doing? What impact are aggressive efficiency policies having? What impact will emerging technologies, such as the Smart Grid, have in improving efficiencies? What does the future hold?

Presenter:

Rick Tempchin, Director, Retail Distribution Policy, Edison Electric Institute
