Welcome to the CSG Midwestern Radioactive Materials Transportation Committee Update.  Below are links and summaries of several important happenings from the last few weeks. Please don't hesitate to contact Lisa (920/458-5910) with any questions or for more information about any of these issues.

domeSpring Meeting Countdown

All the plans are set for next week's meeting of the Midwestern Radioactive Materials Transportation Committee in Indianapolis.  Committee members from nine states will be in attendance, along with a number of speakers and staff from the regional groups.  With program briefings from three DOE offices and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, coupled with special presentations from the Nuclear Energy Institute and EnergySolutions, the agenda for the meeting is sure to be full of "take-aways" for the state attendees.  Briefing materials went out by mail last Friday (June 6) to all meeting registrants.  Since there won't be any spare copies available on-site, all attendees are asked to treat their briefing packet just like they would their American Express card:  don't leave home without it.

If anyone has any questions about the meeting, please call Lisa at 920/458-5910.

As featured in a committee newsflash on June 3, DOE's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) finally made good on a promise to submit a license application (aka "LA") for building the repository.  Actually, OCRWM did better than expected by getting the LA in almost four weeks earlier than planned, albeit much later than anticipated decades ago when OCRWM started down this path.  This particular ball is now bouncing around on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) court, where it is expected to stay for three or four years before the NRC lobs it back to OCRWM either in the form of a license to construct the repository or ... not.

Hoping to save the NRC a whole lot of time, the state of Nevada has already filed a petition to the NRC to reject the application on the grounds that it is "unauthorized and substantially incomplete."  No reaction yet from the NRC regarding the state's contentions.

reorganizationTEC 2

As reported previously (April 1), DOE's Transportation External Coordination Working Group (TEC/WG) may soon undergo a significant transformation.  Overwhelming feedback from the winter meeting in February revealed that most participants feel the TEC has enormous potential that isn't being tapped.  In response, DOE has proposed a restructuring of the TEC topic groups, which are the issue-specific work horses of the TEC.  DOE has also proposed reestablishing a planning committee to assist in planning future TEC meetings.

The regional staff have evaluated DOE's proposals and have prepared some preliminary feedback, which the regional committees are now reviewing.  The Midwestern states will discuss these TEC "future directions and priorities" at the upcoming meeting in Indianapolis.  Following the meeting, the regional staff will consolidate all the state feedback and pass the regions' recommendations on to DOE.

The marked-up TEC documents are in the briefing packets for the meeting.  For those who aren't attending the meeting or who just want a sneak peek, call Lisa and she'll send you a copy.

Thanks for reading!  Next week's meeting will cause a one-week delay in getting the next edition of this newsletter out.  Look for the next issue in three weeks.

Sincerely,

Lisa Janairo
